How it works

How Chikoo splits expenses.

One expense in, a fair answer out. Pick the split that matches the bill; Chikoo handles the arithmetic and keeps the ledger.

Equal split

Divide the total by the number of people, down to the last rupee. The remainder goes to the first person, so the shares always add up to the bill — never a 10-paise ghost.

Exact amounts

When the bill isn't even, split by exact amounts: you had three coffees, they had one. Each person's share is what they actually consumed.

Uneven shares

Split by percentage or custom shares for rent, trips and anything that isn't per head — the flatmate who gets the bigger room pays a bigger slice.

Multiple currencies

One group can hold expenses in several currencies at once. Balances stay exact in the currency they were entered in; converted totals are labelled as approximate.

Then it settles up with the fewest transfers. Instead of everyone paying their share back to whoever paid, Chikoo simplifies the debts — three friends, one payer, and it’s a single transfer, not two.

Beyond the calculator

The calculator is the app, in miniature.

A bill split once is a bill split. Chikoo keeps the ledger going — across months, groups and currencies.

  • Groups for trips, flats and recurring hangouts — each with its own ledger
  • Receipt scanning: photograph a receipt and Chikoo suggests the amount, merchant and date
  • Add friends by phone number before they've even signed up
  • Record settlements made in cash or UPI, and watch balances go to zero
  • Free, with no ads and no paid tier
Questions

Before you split.

The things worth knowing up front — including what Chikoo deliberately doesn’t do.

Is the Chikoo expense splitter free?

Yes. Chikoo is free with no ads, no premium tier and no in-app purchases. The calculator on this page and the full app cost the same: nothing.

Do my friends need the app to split a bill with me?

No. Add someone by phone number or from your contacts, whether or not they're on Chikoo yet, and split with them immediately. When they do sign up with that number, the whole history is already waiting for them.

Can I split by exact amounts, not just equally?

Yes. Besides an even split, Chikoo splits by exact amounts, by percentage, or unevenly — for the bill where you had three coffees and they had one, or rent that isn't divided per head.

Does Chikoo hold or move my money?

No. Chikoo is a record-keeping tool — it tracks who paid what and works out who owes whom. It is not a payment service and never holds or transfers funds. Marking something settled records that a payment happened; it doesn't make one happen.

Which currencies can I split in?

Any of them, and a group can hold several at once. Balances stay exact in the currency they were entered in, and totals are converted to your preferred currency for display — anything converted is labelled as approximate.
